What is a Close Protection Officer or Close Protector?

A Close Protection Officer is otherwise referred to as a bodyguard in its traditional sense.

In South Africa these individuals are also known as a Close Protector, which term is formally recognised and registered under the South African Qualifications Authority.

In the classic sense, a close protection officer/close protector is a highly trained security professional who protects a specific person or group from physical threats, such as assault, kidnapping, or assassination.

Their responsibilities include:

Security planning:

Coordinating travel routes and performing advance reconnaissance at venues to ensure the client's safety.

Close Protection:

Escorting the client and intervening physically if a threat emerges.

Threat assessment:

Constantly assessing a client's environment for potential risks and identifying vulnerabilities.

Emergency Response:

Developing and executing emergency evacuation plans.

Discretion:

Operating with professionalism and confidentiality to maintain the client's privacy, professional, personal and public image.

Remuneration:

After a security professional has completed their required training and registered as a close protection officer with Private Security Industry Regulatory Body (PSIRA) in South Africa, a qualified CPO/Bodyguard can earn between R20 000 - R65 000 per month in South Africa.

They can earn in excess of R100 000 a month working in an international high-risk area.
